In a city where dining is often defined by exclusivity, high price points, and hard-to-secure reservations, restaurateur Abdul Elenani is taking a markedly different approach, one rooted in accessibility, authenticity, and community.

Elenani, founder of Ayat, a rapidly growing group of Palestinian restaurants, is expanding his vision with the launch of Hinds Hall, a new concept in Manhattan that deepens the brand’s commitment to cultural storytelling while maintaining its community-first ethos.

“We are not trying to compete on exclusivity,” said Abdul Elenani, Founder of Ayat. “We are built on community and authenticity.”

At a time when much of New York’s restaurant industry thrives on scarcity and hype, Ayat has distinguished itself by offering generous portions, a welcoming atmosphere, and an inclusive dining experience designed to attract a broad and diverse customer base. The model emphasizes emotional connection and repeat visits over exclusivity.

A New Layer of Meaning with Hinds Hall

Hinds Hall builds on Ayat’s established foundation while introducing a deeper narrative dimension. The restaurant is named after Hind Rajab, a five-year-old girl in Gaza whose death drew international attention, and also honors the students at Columbia University who renamed Hamilton Hall after her during campus protests.

This story is embedded throughout the restaurant’s identity, from its design to its messaging, transforming the space into more than just a dining destination. Located on Manhattan’s Upper West Side near a large student population, Hinds Hall is intentionally positioned as a gathering place for cultural expression, dialogue, and reflection.

Experience as a Competitive Advantage

Like its sister locations, Hinds Hall prioritizes experience as a key differentiator. Each opening is marked by a free public dinner, an initiative that both lowers barriers to entry and introduces Palestinian cuisine to new audiences.

Inside, the environment is intentionally communal, with large portions, a vibrant dining room, and a diverse mix of guests that encourage shared experiences and repeat visits.

“It is not just about dining,” Elenani said. “It is about building something people feel part of.”

This approach reflects a broader industry shift, where restaurants are increasingly competing on atmosphere, connection, and cultural resonance rather than food alone.

Scaling a Community-First Brand

Hinds Hall is part of a larger growth strategy for Ayat, which has already expanded beyond New York with a location in Dallas and plans underway for Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

Rather than relying on traditional replication models, Elenani’s strategy focuses on local integration, through partnerships, community events, and collaborations with organizations such as Muslim Girl. The brand also creates space for community voices and public figures, reinforcing its role as a cultural platform.

A clearly defined identity, openly and unapologetically Palestinian, has further helped Ayat stand out in a crowded and competitive market.

Digital Growth and Cultural Reach

Ayat’s expansion has been fueled in part by a strong organic social media presence, where its blend of food content and cultural storytelling resonates with younger audiences. The opening of its Astoria location generated more than 2 million searches, according to the company.

In addition to brand awareness, Ayat has invested in online ordering and delivery infrastructure, enabling it to reach customers beyond its physical footprint in a fast-paced urban market.

Looking Ahead

Elenani has indicated that Hinds Hall will be the final New York location for the brand, with future growth focused on national expansion.

However, the long-term vision extends beyond scaling restaurant locations.

“We see Hinds Hall and Ayat as more than restaurants,” said Abdul Elenani, Founder of Ayat. “We see them as cultural spaces that bring people together.”
