Marquis Who’s Who honors Widy Matulik as a Top Professional in Business for her leading expertise in the finance industry. With more than two decades of professional experience, Ms. Matulik has found success in a research-focused space. She sees the real value of her services as helping clients get to where they want to be; in doing so, she grows alongside them.
Early Education and Guidance
Ms. Matulik has always considered herself to be a numbers-oriented person. This perspective led her to become involved in math research during high school and pursue an education in accounting. After completing a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 2003, she was eager to get started, but her accounting professor offered advice.
“He said, ‘If you want to go into the Big Four, you make more money, [but] if you want to learn a lot, you should work for a smaller firm,’” Ms. Matulik shared. “So, after I graduated, I worked for Ganer+ Ganer.”
Building a Career at The Bonadio Group
Rather than joining one of the most prominent accounting firms, Ms. Matulik saw the wisdom in building a broader skill base for herself. After working with Ganer + Ganer for over 18 years, the firm merged with The Bonadio Group, where she shortly was promoted to Principal within the company’s tax service line. The Bonadio Group, a firm that recently won awards such as Top 100 firms by Accounting Today and Fortune’s Best Places to Work in New York, aligns with Ms. Matulik’s values of being a trusted advisor to their client, not just a tax preparer.
Ms. Matulik’s responsibilities to her clients were not solely about tax returns and planning, but also about developing a relationship to better serve their needs. In an academic setting, everything felt clinical; at The Bonadio Group, she sees value in services. Working with the same clients for 20 years, she says, it almost feels as if they are family.
Mentorship and the Value of Client Connections
The core of Ms. Matulik’s success is her connection with her clients. Though she is grateful for the knowledge she has gained over the years, from navigating QuickBooks and payroll to various forms of tax, she did not see how it all worked together until she built real client relationships. While navigating her career with this perspective in mind, she eagerly shares her approach with her peers.
Ms. Matulik’s proudest career achievement is the mentorship she has provided. Over her time as a principal at The Bonadio Group, she has mentored and taught many colleagues. Watching them grow and flourish under her guidance is very rewarding, and she hopes to continue this practice in the future.
Ambition for the Future
Within the next few years, Ms. Matulik envisions herself as a partner at The Bonadio Group. To this end, she hopes to develop the firm’s niche in the entertainment business. She believes this area is expanding due to state-level changes, creating demand for improvements in this specialization. As Ms. Matulik moves forward, she remains dedicated to supporting her clients through new challenges.
