The device uses direct therapeutic ultrasound, a technology developed by Dr. Mitchell and his students at the University of Washington, to simultaneously cut and cauterize tissue. Dr. Mitchell credits his career success to the capable teams he collaborates with and to his wife’s unwavering support. He has dedicated 47 years to his profession, including 12 in his current leadership role at Novuson. His journey into engineering was inspired by a personal search for a more rewarding career after his high school guidance counselor encouraged him to pursue a career as an automotive mechanic. With his wife’s encouragement, he returned to college and became the first in his family to earn a degree.
Making an Impact
One notable achievement in Dr. Mitchell’s research career was demonstrating that stem cells can be effectively manipulated using ultrasound technology and that mechanical architectures can influence stem cell behavior. He is committed to research, as evidenced by his extensive work as a senior research engineer and scientist at the University of Washington from 2006 to 2015. He has also co-authored numerous papers, many of which have been published in respected journals such as “Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology” and the “Journal of Endourology.”
Looking to the future, Dr. Mitchell plans to retire in the next five years, but he sees himself remaining actively involved in advancing technology and developing new inventions. He hopes to see Novuson’s technology become part of the global surgical landscape.
Beyond his professional life, Mr. Mitchell stays active in his community and industry organizations. He currently serves as a Ride Leader for the Cascade Bicycle Club, a civic role he has held since 2012. He is also a long-standing member of several professional organizations, including the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Society, the International Society for Therapeutic Ultrasound and the Acoustical Society of America.
