Classic beach paddle, reimagined for competition anywhere.
sollbol, the brand behind a new competitive beach paddle game, has announced its debut at Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa during the July 4 weekend.
The company, which began with the question of whether beach paddle could be transformed into a competitive sport, grew out of founder Robert Arzanipour’s love for Long Island’s beaches. Arzanipour has always felt the game was lacking, which was why he created the new competitive sport.
“I wanted more competition, more athleticism, more intensity. So I started experimenting,” Arzanipour shares. “I changed the rules. I reshaped the game. I kept refining it until it became something more than just a beach game.”
A Background in Drawings and Design
The game’s background moved from Arzanipour’s notebook sketches to engineered drawings and 3D mockups. Arzanipour, a longtime builder and developer in New York City and Long Island, wanted to create something reminiscent of paddleball but new. The combination of design thinking and construction-minded problem-solving is evident in the brand’s messaging.
Portability is a central part of the game’s design, meant to reduce the friction associated with organized play, such as court reservations and permanent installations. Setup is simple: everything packs into a single reel, and the full-court set can be carried easily and assembled in minutes on sand or grass in a backyard, at a park, or on the beach.
Built From Generational Games
sollbol traces its roots to familiar beach games such as Kadima and Smashball, but positions itself as a game with clearer rules, more defined points, and a more athletic, strategy-driven experience.
Described as a competitive outdoor paddle sport that can be set up almost anywhere, sollbol is played in singles or doubles, and its official rules emphasize smart shot-making over brute force. With no court net and no spiking, the scoring begins after the third touch of a rally. Players earn points for landing the ball in bounds and for hitting an opponent’s boundary lines.
The game also draws inspiration from the multi-generational paddleball traditions long enjoyed by families and beachgoers, blending casual social play with a more structured competitive format.
A Homegrown Story, Debuting July 4
This July 4, sollbol will debut at Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa. The launch aims to introduce sollbol as a new competitive paddle sport designed to evolve traditional beach paddle ball into a more structured, social, and playable sport.
The debut will showcase the sport in a premium Montauk beach setting, and will give guests and early players the chance to experience the game during one of the Hamptons’ most visible summer weekends.
With the launch of their sport, Robert Arzanipour and the sollbol team aim to create something both new and familiar, while offering players the chance to purchase full-court sets that can be set up and played practically anywhere.
